In August of 2013, CNN sent 40+ journalist to the world’s busiest airport in Atlanta, GA to document all that goes on and all that it takes to keep the airport running for a 24-hour period. The result is this project – the most ambitious from and editorial, design and technological point of view that CNN digital has attempted in the 6 years I have been with the company. The design challenge here was to be almost overwhelmingly comprehensive while still given the user a means of making sense of the massive amounts of photos, stories and other information. Editorially we wanted to have one path through the piece to be curated and to that end we provide a main navigation at the bottom of the screen that allows the user to jump between certain editorially determined themes. However, we also wanted the user to be able to experience the content in a time-based fashion, hence we provide a secondary navigation on the right side of the window that allows the user to see the content based on time of day. The experience provides an immersion into the sights, rhythms, people and inner workings of the world’s busiest airport on a typical day.
